Is Starbucks Guilty of Green Washing

Is Starbucks Guilty of Green Washing Photo by Cherrysweetdeal via Flickr Starbucks is the world’s largest coffee house company, with over 20,000 stores in 62 countries. The environmental mission statement of the company claims that it is “committed to a role of environmental leadership in all facets of the business…” According to their mission statement, they aim to fulfill their goals by “understanding environmental issues”, “developing innovative and flexible solutions to bring about change”, “striving to buy, sell, and use environmentally friendly products”, and “instilling environmental responsibility as a corporate value”. In fact, their website has an entire section dedicated to their environmental cause and it highlights their efforts towards building greener stores, recycling and reducing waste, and ethically sourcing their coffee; but how far does the corporation truly go in accomplishing their mission? The issue of whether Starbucks is sincere in its efforts to promote environmental sustainability or not is frequently under question. Theyve often been accused of green washing, or the practice of using misleading information to present an environmentally responsible public image. Recently, Starbucks released a $1 reusable coffee cup whose design is aimed to create a cost effective way to encourage customers to reduce their waste. The company encourages customers to bring in their reusable cups by offering a 10 cent discount on their coffee refills. By the year 2015, Starbucks aims to increase the behavior of using multi-use cups from the current 1.9% to 5%. However, the benefit of encouraging the use of reusable cups depends on several factors. Some important considerations include the average number of uses that the cup gets (estimated to be roughly about one month of use), the impact of the plastic used in the production of the cup, the issue of the possibility of cross-contaminat ion of germs and the potential of negative health impacts for humans or the fact that the reusable cups are produced in China and must be transported to the United States. The idea of integrating a reusable cup in the everyday routine of coffee drinkers would be immensely beneficial in reducing the waste incurred by disposable cups, as roughly one billion cups a year are consumed by Starbucks coffee drinkers alone. Most Starbucks cups cannot be recycled in paper recycling systems because of the plastic lining inside the cups that keeps liquids from running out. The plastic lining in coffee cups was a concept developed by Starbucks to end the wasteful practice of double cupping hot beverages, but while solving one problem, it created another. Additionally, Starbucks was the first company to create cups that contain 10% post consumer recycled content, which is estimated to save thousands of trees, save half a million gallons of waste water, and several million pounds of garbage from landfills. Additionally, Starbucks claims to be an organization that “strives to instill environmental responsibility. However, in 2008 the wasteful water practices of the company came under great scrutiny when it was discovered that nearly 6.2 million gallons of water were being wasted a day. The company employed the use of dipper because it was believed to be the more sanitary option for washing spoons. After the discovery of such immense water waste, Starbucks pledged to reduce water consumption by 25% in company owned stores by the year 2015, and quickly began to look for alternative spoon washing methods. Since 2008, there has been a decrease in water waste by 17.7%, which may be an improvement, but ultimately these wasteful practices and the claim of being environmentally conscious or responsible closely resemble the practice of green marketing, a corporation’s attempt to associate its products, services, or identity with environmentalism. Ultimately, the claim that they are a company who aims to “buy, sell, and use environmentally friendly products” is a bit of an oxymoron. The coffee industry in and of itself is not sustainable. The cultivation of coffee requires that the native vegetation of tropical countries be removed so that the soils become vulnerable to erosion and loss of topsoil. Coffee also has a very large water footprint, requiring 140 liters of water to produce a single cup of coffee. By promoting coffee consumption, Starbucks is only perpetuating the growth of consumerism under the guise of environmental responsibility.

What Is An Advertised Adept Tutor?

What Is An Advertised Adept Tutor? What is an avid tutor? If you are one of the many individuals who regularly spend time studying and earning money by tutoring people at the church, high school, university, or college, then you probably have an avid tutor on your hands. The term means a person who spends hours of their spare time working at the task of tutoring others and this can be at home, in their office, at the local library, or on the internet. This individual also takes on the additional burden of driving a car to the location where they will tutor, as they will not drive the automobile themselves.Tutoring does not just come with experience, and it is not limited to those of any particular age or gender. Individuals with children and babies in daycare have tutors who sit in the background waiting for them to bring in the children while the adult teacher focuses on the youngsters. If you have children at home or babysitting work, an avid tutor can help you out in your duties, w hether it be watching your kids or maybe teaching them a song or two while you enjoy a glass of wine. Most people tend to think that one time spent helping another individual is equivalent to one time spent helping themselves. While this is the case in many situations, some activities require a bit more than a pair of hands. Parents may need to pick up their children, or drive them to their appointment. They may need to talk to the tutor about a problem, ask a question, or perhaps talk about some grievances they are having. One of the main reasons why individuals have an avid tutor is because they can see some potential in the student. Since they spend so much time watching and assisting each other and learning from one another, this can give them a unique insight into the person that they are looking to educate. There is an undeniable value in receiving information from those that have a background in their field. What makes someone so valuable to a tutor as well as the tutor to the t utor is that they usually have the necessary tools and devices that will help them to tutor anyone. Some individuals enjoy using laptops, or even tablets in their daily pursuits, which makes teaching through an interactive application a more feasible option. Often times, they will take the tablets or laptops off the table when teaching, which helps encourage those who may want to carry them around. One of the best reasons for having an avid tutor, is that they will help out when it is most needed. The time spent with the tutor has to be better spent doing more productive things, rather than taking a break from your classroom to chat with a tutor who has more students than you do!Tutoring is a great way to have fun, earn money, and see your child you have been helping grow. This will only be better if you consider it an investment. To learn more about tutoring, you can click on the link below to learn more about tutoring and the benefits it offers.

College And University Tutoring Skills Are Made Easy By Being An Independent Tutor

College And University Tutoring Skills Are Made Easy By Being An Independent TutorBeing a college student is never easy, but you can gain some very valuable college and university tutoring skills and experience if you are willing to work hard. The easiest way to help a person learn skills for school is to tutor them. Although there are some tutor services available, the best way to make money from tutoring is to become an independent tutor.Independent tutors will give their clients the benefit of their experience while giving them the advantage of being able to offer their clients all of the tutoring services they want for a fee. The idea is that the client pays you to learn the skill you want them to learn. In this case, the clients never pay your tuition fees, and they never pay your study materials either. They pay you your time, and you pay them. The thing about independent tutoring is that the clients don't need to pay your tuition fees, or your books, or your study materials. Yo u get paid simply by the effort you put into tutoring. You will need to be extremely dedicated and motivated, but you will find it much easier to be successful at this type of tutoring. This is because you will be paying your tuition fees and you will also be paying for all of the study materials you need, so it's easy to see how dedication can really make a difference.Independent tutors can get a good client base through word of mouth and referrals. The biggest recommendation I can offer for students who wish to gain college and university tutoring skills is to look for other students who have been tutored by independent tutors. This is true especially when the student is a new college student, but it is true even for students who are a couple years older.Students will go from good to great over the course of a few years when they use the tutoring servicethey've found. They learn how to deal with the difficult situations that come up in college, and how to resolve them before they b ecome bigger problems. They gain the skills they need to do well in college. These are just a few reasons why college students benefit so much from independent tutoring. There are many others, but you can find out more about independent tutoring by reading a great article I wrote in the school newspaper. It's an article you'll want to print out and show others.

How to Make a Comprehensive Chemistry Panel

How to Make a Comprehensive Chemistry PanelIn most large universities, one will find a comprehensive chemistry panel. The chemistry panel is usually made up of several parts including the chemistry instructors. One thing that you should consider is how often you are going to have access to a chemistry lab. This is going to help you when it comes to the designing of your chemistry panels. Although it is not essential for the design of your panel, it is always good to have some pictures available so that you can make a choice for your chemistry labs. Also, there are many other types of chemistry labs that you might want to have. The chemistry instructors are going to make the choice on what type of chemistry lab you are going to have and they are also going to determine what type of materials that you are going to have. You are going to find that a chemistry instructor can help you with the composition of your own chemistry labs. He or she is going to ensure that you have all the right supplies so that you do not have to worry about having to buy any materials.Tcomprehensive chemistry panel They are also going to help you with the homework assignments that you nee d to do. They are going to ensure that the labs are all going to be done correctly and if you do not know how to do something then you will have an expert to help you through the project.

Should I Go To Washington University in St. Louis

Should I Go To Washington University in St. Louis The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teach theyre sharing their college experiences as well. Benjamin graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in 2012 where he studied Environmental Studies and Anthropology. He currently tutors in Washington D.C., specializing in Trigonometry tutoring, Biology tutoring, Reading tutoring, and much more. See what he had to say about his alma mater: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or safe is the campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Benjamin: There is plenty of parking, but its expensive. However, you really dont need a car because everythingincluding off-campus housingis close to campus. The campus is also finally getting more bike friendly, with racks, divided walkways, etc. Regarding safety, I think the school does well as a whole to keep crime under control. I never feel unsafe on campus. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Benjamin: Faculty are typically very approachable, especially for small classes. I developed some really great relationships that I still cherish today.VT: How would you describe the dorm life - rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students?Benjamin:Dorm life at Wash U was definitely a highlight, especially with the newly constructed dining hall. However, food was really expensive, so you're definitely paying for quality. Regarding housing, it's almosttoonice. I liked living in an older dorm that felt like college; the new dorms feel more like hotels. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Benjamin: Yes and no. I double-majored in Environmental Science and Anthropology. Wash U is GREAT for Anthropology and I loved all of my classes and faculty, many of which were renowned in their field. However, despite an apparent push for sustainability on campus, Environmental Science was a very poor major. Classes did not provide tangible skills andunless you went the science routeit was pretty much a joke. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Benjamin: I didnt vibe well with the Greek Life scene, so the fact that around 40% of undergrads were Greek was sort of a let down. However, there are other places to make good friends and the school is large enough to find people like you. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Benjamin: If you use the resources provided, they are extremely helpful. The CC is definitely catered to business students, which is a bummer, but my career advisor was nonetheless amazing and an exceptional resource. In general, though, the school is very focused on your future success and less so on your immediate needs. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Benjamin: There were a ridiculous amount of libraries, which was nice. However, I always found the main library extremely depressing and stressful. Generally, there are plenty of places to study and they are usually not too crowded. This makes sense considering people are constantly studying. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between? To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Benjamin: Every year I grew to love St. Louis more, but it definitely was not love at first sight. There are pockets of culture throughout the city, so once you find them, there is a lot to do and see. Most students typically only make it to a nearby street called the Delmar Loop, which is decorated with bars, shops, and eateries. St. Louis is actually fun once you get to know it! VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Benjamin: I went the science route, so I was actually displeased with the class size, as they were always large and filled with pre-med students. I went in expecting to see the advertised small class sizes, but in reality, mine were quite large. That being said, most of my friends had small classes and those of mine that were small were great. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Benjamin: I worked in a digital primate lab run by one of my professors of physical anthropology. Although I enjoyed learning about primate behaviour through video observation, this experience was incredible because of the relationship I built with this professor. I think building great relationships with faculty is what college is all about. Check out Benjamins tutoring profile. A bloated feeling, nausea, perhaps even the need to throw up... it isn't very nice and will also impact negatively on your training session. Many fitness experts suggest waiting 2 hours after a hearty meal before hitting the gym, but this all depends on your metabolism and is unique to you. Also, don't let this put you off having a small snack. Sometimes eating a banana can give you fuel and a kick of energy thanks to the carbohydrates. Being really hungry can cause you to feel a bit sick too!Exercising at the WeekendIf you set your weekend aside to exercise, you’ll know that it helps you relax and de-stress before the working week starts again. However, if you work out frequently during the week, you may want to have the weekend off.Just like you have two days off work to rest your brain, your body also needs to recover from the week. It’s all about managing your training program by thinking about workout intensity, frequency and the type of exercise you choose. You should always aim for short and frequent training sessions rather than 2 or 3 long workouts per week.By training regularly during the week and taking the weekend to rest, you’ll avoid progressive fatigue and lower the risk of injury. When To Exer cise In Order To Improve Your SleepA small amount of exercise is needed each day for the body but also to improve our mind space. This is why it is important to work up a sweat in the gym or by going out for a walk if you want to get a good night sleep and feel truly rested. But. again, when is the best time to exercise for this workout to have the necessary effect on our sleep?Well, experts suggest that getting up and performing your workout in the morning could lead to a deeper sleep that night.Since a decent night's sleep is partially down to blood pressure (did you know this?), then an early morning exercise routine can help to achieve the correct drop in blood pressure when night falls. If you suffer from sleep apnea, you more than likely don't experience this nighttime drop in pressure, which is said to be good for the heart. If you've ever consulted a doctor or sleep therapist about problems with your sleep, they will no doubt have prescribed a more active lifestyle to help i mprove this.Having said that, focusing particularly on strength training at any time of the day could be the recipe for a better night's sleep too.Although lifting weights at different times of the day won't affect the mentioned blood pressure decrease during those early hours, those who pump iron at any time of the day can benefit from better sleep. Those who lift weights early in the morning tend to fall asleep faster at night according to some fitness surveys, whilst those who hit the gym later in the evening are said to wake up less frequently. It's a win-win!While getting a good night sleep is essential to our physical and mental health, sleeping too late can cut down on the time you have to exercise. And we don't just mean going to the gym - for each extra hour you spend in bed, you are missing out on an hour of physical activity and this can quickly lead to a negative cycle. When To Alter Your Workout Regime?Dangers Of Raised TemperaturesWhether you decide to take this advice or not, you do you because only you know what feels right for you and your body and current lifestyle. However, one time that you may wish to take note of experts' opinions is when there are certain changes in weather which could endanger your health if not considered, much like this heatwave that is upon us in Europe in the coming week.Whether you're walking, running, playing football or doing yoga (with the exception of hot yoga which is meant for you to get hot!), take care when the temperature rises. If you exercise outdoors in hot weather rather than using an air-conditioned gym, use precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses - drink plenty of water, dress sensibly and don't push yourself too much.Similarly, don't underestimate the strength of the sun and the impact of heat exhaustion when you leave your fitness centre. Make sure you fill up your water bottle before leaving and, if walking home, be sure to wear a cap to avoid getting sunstroke and feeling poorly.Pay attention to warning signs during hot weather, and keep a close eye on the following:Muscle crampsWeaknessFatigueNausea or vomitingHeadachesExcessive sweatingDizziness or lightheadednessConfusionIrritabilityShortness of breathVisual problemsIf you experience any of the above symptoms, stop exercising immediately and lower your body temperature as well get rehydrated right away. It's a good idea to tell someone how you are feeling just in case your condition takes a turn for the worse when you are in the changing rooms or gym shower, for example, or taking a dip in the swimming pool to cool down.Going back to the title of this piece, it is recommended to exercise early in the morning or early in the evening to avoid the hottest times of the day.Cooler Temperatures And What To DoVery cold temperatures might put you off doing your usual fitness upkeep yet, for some, neither rain, snow or tornados could hold them back from getting a session in at the gym. When exercising during cold weather, foll ow these tips:Don't exercise outdoors if there is low wind chill forecastKeep skin covered as the wind can penetrate your clothes and leave exposed skin vulnerable to frostbiteConsider delaying your workout if it's raining or snowing unless you have waterproof gear.Beware of training in freezing temperatures especially if an older adult or young child, as you are at greater risk of illnesses such as hyperthermia.Dress in layers so that you can remove a layer if needed rather than getting too warmAdd some insulation and a waterproof, breathable outer layer if it's wetMix up your exercises: walk in between running if the weather is a bit harsh on youProtect your head, hands, feet and ears by wearing hats/headbands, gloves and warm socks. If it's really chilly, a ski mask might be necessary to protect the skin on your face from the wind.Adjusting Exercise When A SeniorAs an older man or woman, you may find that you don't have the energy to exercise first thing in the morning as is so o ften recommended for keep fit fanatics. For this reason, senior citizens often do their workout routine in the early afternoon and can't restrict themselves to exercising at a specific time like some others may be able to do. No matter how light your exercise, keeping your body healthy is very important, no matter what time of the day you do it!It's essential that you get medical clearance from your doctor before starting an exercise program, and you are advised against training in difficult settings (i.e. high summer, freezing temperatures). Also, diabetics may need to adjust the timing of taking their medication and eating their meals if they set out to begin an exercise schedule. As a senior gym fanatic, bear these tips in mind:Listen to your body. Your routine shouldn't be painful or make you feel below par. Also, stop exercising at the first sign of dizziness, shortness of breath, chest pain or any other unusual sensation.Don't try to complete a workout training destined for a y oung or middle-aged adult. No matter how fit you are, your body may have some limits when you reach a higher age so you shouldn't be led by a determination to keep up with the young ones. If you can though safely and without extensive discomfort, then good on you and keep at it!Delay exercising if one of your joints is red, swollen, or tender.Start slow and build up at a steady pace. If you haven’t been active in a while, start exercising little by little at a pace you are comfortable with. You might like to space workouts in ten-minute slots twice a day, or simply do one class a week.Warm up and cool down properly to avoid injury.Your Workout, Your ChoiceAs we've already said, despite the many recommendations and advice of fitness experts, sometimes how you spend your time is more important than exercise science, so the time you choose to exercise really is up to you.As long as you feel that you are making good progress towards your fitness goals or becoming generally healthier, it’s shouldn’t matter too much if your performance is influenced by the time of day. The point is to enjoy keeping fit and healthy, otherwise what is the purpose of it!?Following a fitness program will help you get to know your body better, and what time of day works for you.
